Herbert Kohler was born in 1952. and studied engineering at Stuttgart University from 1971 until 1976.
After graduating from university, Herbert Kohler joined Daimler-Benz AG and started working in the planning department for the production plants.
In 1982 he received his PHD degree by the Stuttgart University with a thesis on process optimization and waste-air processing in a foundry.
In 1990 he introduced the complex issue of environmental protection at Mercedes-Benz AG. Under his management, the Environment, Technology and Traffic Center was founded.
In 1993 Herbert Kohler changed to the passenger car development. After being responsible for several product feasibility projects, he took the lead of the Strategic Product Planning until 1999.
After holding positions in Product Management within Passenger Car Marketing, Herbert Kohler was appointed Vice president "Body and Powertrain Research" in October 2000. In this capacity, he is responsible for Propulsion Technology, Body and HMI, Materials Technology and Production Technology. In addition, he coordinates the research activities of the Mercedes Car Group.
In March 2002 Herbert Kohler was additionally appointed Chief Environmental Officer of DaimlerChrysler AG
Herbert Kohler was appointed honorary professor by Stuttgart University in 1998.
